Acquired: 1539
The property of the Carew family, it came into the hands of Henry VIII upon the attainder of Sir Nicholas Carew for treason. It remained a royal possession until 1552. At about this period the Great Hall was rebuilt ca. 1550 in a style similar to that of Hampton Court but there is no evidence that any works were carried out in Henry VIII’s time, although that monarch did visit the property on more than one occasion.
Much of the house was remodeled in the nineteenth century and little if any remains from the Henrician era.
