Ruins of Chertsey abbey (photos: C.A. Stanford)
Acquired: 1535
Henry acquired the manor house of Chobham Park, a part of Chertsey Abbey, two to three years before the Abbey was dissolved. He visited the house in 1538, possibly for hunting. Building accounts include notes on alterations to the kitchens (1534), enlarging the king’s bedchamber and raying [dressing] chamber (1537) and the division of a former barn into lodges and offices including the buttery and wardrobe storage for the king’s and queen’s beds. More repairs, including glazing, were made in 1542 and 1543, indicating further visits by the king in those years.
The estate formed part of a larger parcel of lands near Hampton Court, but was sold by Queen Mary in 1558, and the house, on the site of Chobham Park Farm, was removed in the eighteenth century.
