Acquired: 1515
Though Henry VII had begun the process of estate exchange for Hanworth manor, it was not until 1515 that Henry VIII finally acquired the title for the property. Improvements and repairs were carried out under both monarchs, and Henry VIII often visited Hanworth. Prior to 1532 he had the house redecorated with “antique” terracotta roundels in a style then popular. The gardens and orchards were also substantial here.
Henry settled the estate on Anne Boleyn in 1532, and in 1544 on Catherine Parr. The estate went out of Crown ownership in the seventeenth century and the house was badly damaged by fire in the late eighteenth century. Some brick remnants and part of the original moat are all that remain.
