Acquired: 1536
A property of the archbishops of Canterbury, Mortlake was part of an exchange of properties Henry required of Archbishop Cranmer in 1536. Henry granted the property to his Master Secretary, Thomas Cromwell, but it was sold back to the king in 1540 (as part of the Wimbledon properties) to form part of the honour of Hampton Court. Henry granted the estate to his last wife, Katherine Parr, as part of her dower, but after her death the house was taken down for its building materials.
Henry’s building at Mortlake was apparently significant, as he pulled down the old church there in 1543 and built a new one. However, building particulars do not survive, though we have an account of his general expenditure on the site. No remains are visible today.
