Pyrgo, Essex

Acquired: 1542

One of the king’s courtiers, Sir Brian Tuke, created an estate here ca. 1536 of about 300 acres with a house formed around two courtyards, described as “a house of brick covered with tile, cased with goodly windows of white glass and with conduits of water to every house of office” (gatehouse gazetteer online). Henry purchased the estate and used the house as an annex to nearby Havering palace. Elizabeth granted the property to Lord Grey; the house was demolished by the eighteenth century and nothing now remains.
